Overview:

This workshop brings together representatives from across the government, academia, and industry to discuss how to most effectively use social media and web 2.0 technology. The first half of the workshop will include talks from individuals on the impact of these tools on community formation and collaboration; lessons learned and best practices on implementing these tools internally and externally in large organizations; security issues associated with social networking and web 2.0 tools, and the next generation of technologies that may serve as the backbone for advanced collaboration. The second half of the workshop will consist of breakout discussions. Some topics we would like to address include:

  • What are the capability gaps in existing social media and web 2.0 tools?
  • How do you select the right tool given your project or organizational structure?
  • What are the organizational hurdles in successfully implementing these collaboration tools? What organizational change management techniques can help this process?
  • What are the technical hurdles in using and personalizing these tools for use within large organizations?
  • What are the security and privacy issues associated with these technologies? How is the perception of these concerns changing?

By the end of the workshop, we hope to establish the best methods for identifying emerging tools; choosing the right collaborative tools for projects or organizations; characterizing social media/web 2.0 tools in terms of the capabilities provide; and providing guidance for future technical development in this domain.
